I've got a DJ41 and was looking at the date flip and it's approx 0:04 a.m. last night (although I think that changes from midnight to midnight). If I were to manually change the time via the crown, it flips over at midnight on the dot.

The Roulette Date wheel is only available on the Datejust models with the dial options mentioned above, however, since the Datejust is powered by the Rolex caliber 3135 you can have it custom installed in other watches with the same movement. It makes for a fun mod on a Yacht-Master, Submariner, Sea-Dweller or Deepsea – it will also work on a . It can be fixed. There’s nothing wrong with the mechanism- that’s a nice snappy date change, but it can absolutely be set to change exactly at midnight by a competent watchmaker. Don’t ask Rolex to do it, it’s within spec. For some this takes several hours. Rolex uses a cam and flat spring. When the cam reaches midnight, the spring is released and snaps the wheel to the next day instantly, as your Explorer is doing. The mechanism works with each 24 hour turn of the entire movement.
The date flips to the next day instantly on the 12am mark. I am also unable to roll the date backwards anymore with neither position 2 (date change) nor position 3 (time change). I am not entirely sure why I was able to flip the date backwards with position 3 just now. My Explorer II would flip over at about 12:05 and since Rolex Canada serviced it the date flips over at 11:55 and I was told its perfectly normal and acceptable for the date to change before, after or right on midnight.
